Mack reviews Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing GelIt was by sheer chance that I found this product.  It was Bonus Time at Clinique in Boots and there I was deciding which third product I should buy in order to get a cute box of free goodies.  I had my Superbalanced foundation (which I have loved for many years) and a new lipstick from the Colour Surge Butter Shine Range (which I also adore), and for my third product, I wanted something to help keep oil and blemishes at bay.  The lovely assistant at Clinique recommended this purifying gel which contains salicylic acid and cost £20 for a 30ml bottle.

Clinique says "Our daily treatment gel starts clearing blemishes upon application. Helps prevent new blemishes from making an unwelcome appearance. Make visibly clearer skin a way of life" and on the Clinique website, 92% of reviewers recommend the product.

After cleansing my face, I have been applying a thin layer of the gel to my face twice a day for the last month.  The product lasts well (I have enough left for another one to two weeks I think) and only a pea-sized amount of gel is needed per application.  After applying it, it instantly makes my skin feel matte and taut.  I'm impressed how quickly any shiny patches on my t-zone visibly disappear.  However, I do find that I need to apply a good amount of moisturiser immediately afterwards as my skin feels dry and moreover, my foundation does not go on smoothly (nothing worse than applying foundation on dry skin and ending up with the 'cakey' effect!!!).  So I apply an oil-free moisturiser afterwards (I use Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel).

So, does it work?  It was hard to tell at first.  Results were not instant.  Although I had less shiny patches to blot out during the day, I was still getting the annoying bump here and there after the first week of use.   However, the gel was particularly good if applied directly to an offending spot as the spot would dry up and disappear quicker than normal, leaving no scarring.  I persevered with applying the gel twice a day and, in conjunction with exfoliating (see our post on facial exfoliating scrubs) after a month I actually do have less blemishes!  So I am quite pleased with it.

Will I buy another bottle once this one runs out?  Still deciding.  I am not 100% happy with the way it makes my feel skin drained of any moisture immediately after I apply it.  I see from the reviews on the Clinique website that others also have mentioned dried out skin after prolonged use, but they generally praise it for getting rid of spots and blemishes.  Maybe it is best used for targeted treatment rather than all over use? I really do feel my skin benefits from a regular dose of salicylic acid but I am probably more inspired to try other salicylic acid-based products, both Clinique and non Clinique, before settling on a the product which will permanently join my skin care regime.  However, I do recommend others to try this product - it could work for you and once I run out of this Clinique gel, I may very well need to run back to it if the blemishes start to uncontrollably sprout back!

Talking about skincare....respect to Em Ford (mypaleskin.blogspot.com) for her brilliant, inspiring and moving YouTube video.
